Like most components of your home’s exterior, your outdoor HVAC unit is exposed to wear and tear as well as the risk of damage. Here air conditioning and heating repair company Allison shares some tips on how to protect it from damage.
Choose a Sheltered Location
While most outdoor units are designed to withstand sun and rain, keeping it in a shaded location can help reduce damage caused by direct sunlight. Yo can build a shelter to protect it from the sun and rain. Avoid building an enclosure around it to allow for air circulation. It’s also best to leave two to three feet of clearance around it by trimming plants and removing any obstructions.
Clean It Regularly
Most outdoor HVAC units don’t have solid casings, except for small components that contain electronics. Instead, outdoor enclosures have grilles or perforations for air circulation. Over time, dust, small leaves and bits of debris may make their way into through the grilles, damaging the coils and aluminum fins. Some outdoor units are designed for easy cleaning, while for others cleaning will require an air conditioning service appointment. Whichever type of HVAC unit your home has, you should have it cleaned regularly.
Cover It When Not In Use
You don’t use your outdoor HVAC unit all year ’round, especially if your home is equipped with a furnace or boiler for heating. Cover the outdoor HVAC unit with a tarp or a similarly durable waterproof material when you’re not using it. Make sure it’s tied to something strong and sturdy to keep it in place, especially during inclement weather.
Train Your Pets to Stay Away from It
Most dogs are territorial, and they mark their “property” by urinating on it. This can cause corrosion that may lead to a refrigerant leak. Keep an eye on any dogs you have during the first few weeks after installation to make sure they stay away from it; if they don’t, you’ll have to train them to do so.
