Good airflow in your home’s ductwork is essential for keeping your home comfortable and well-ventilated, as well helping keep your HVAC system in good condition. In today’s post, Allison Air Conditioning shares tips on how you can improve and maintain good airflow in your air ducts.
Replace your air filters regularly. Your HVAC system has air filters in place to capture dust and other particles floating in the air. Eventually, air filters can become clogged, which will impede airflow and increase the workload on your HVAC system. Most types of air conditioning systems feature user-replaceable air filters, which means you don’t have to set an appointment every time you need to replace them: you can just do it yourself. A standard whole-home air conditioner needs a new air filter every three months, or once a month during seasons of heavy usage. When buying new air filters, make sure you’re buying the exact same size as previously to avoid air leaks.
Have the ducts cleaned and sealed. Air ducts need to be cleaned every five years or so. If scheduled professional air duct cleaning isn’t part of your air conditioning repair routine, make it so — not only will this help ensure good airflow, it will also help prevent germs, bacteria and mold from circulating in your home. Ask your HVAC contractor if sealing is part of their air duct cleaning process. This is an important step, as air ducts have joints that can form leaks over the years.
Plan your furniture placement. Ideally, vents and registers must be clear of obstructions, so try not to block them with furniture. When buying furniture for a specific room, take measurements and, if possible, choose pieces of furniture that are just short or narrow enough not to block air vents. Alternatively, don’t place furniture flush against the air vents. Instead, allow several inches of clearance between the vents and the furniture. The same goes for floor-level vents: don’t cover them with rugs, and if you have to install furniture over them, choose furniture with legs to allow some headroom.
