The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) recently published its report titled 2019 Most Challenging Places to Live With Spring Allergies. In it, Riverside, CA, is ranked as 4th in the West region and 52nd nationwide. Allison Air Conditioning examines what it means to suffer from spring allergies, and how your air conditioner can help minimize their effects.
Causes of Spring Allergies
Plants release seeds and pollen in the springtime as a part of their reproductive cycles. Around these times, people with pollen allergies begin exhibiting symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing and congestion.
In certain areas, pollen and other particulates that trigger allergies tend to stay in the air longer because of local environmental factors. The AAFA factored this data, along with the allergy medicine usage count and the number of available board-certified allergists in a given area, to compile the aforementioned report.
Managing Spring Allergies
Before exhorting to extremes and moving to another city, take into account the following methods you can use to manage allergy triggers:
-
Maintain Good Indoor Air Quality — Air conditioners are equipped with air filters that need to be cleaned regularly. Make it a point to inspect your air filters as often as once a month and clean them if full. You may also want to upgrade to electrostatic air filters for better filtration. Your HVAC technician can help you choose the right one for your air conditioner.
-
Limit Exposure to Allergens — Avoid going outdoors unless you have to, and when you do, cover your hair and use a nasal filter or mask. Bring an epi pen or whatever antihistamine you were prescribed.
-
Avoid Bringing Allergens Indoors — Dry your clothes using a clothes dryer instead of outdoor clotheslines. When coming in from outside, change your clothes and wash your hair before going to bed. Limit contact with pets that spend a lot of time outdoors.
-
See an Allergist — Visit an allergist for recommendations on treating persistent allergies.
