If you’re still trying to think of new year’s resolutions, why not choose some that will benefit your home — in this case, your HVAC system? In today’s post, local heating and air conditioning repair contractor Allison Air Conditioning shares good habits to start and bad habits to break that will benefit your HVAC system.
Start With These Good Habits
If you haven’t been doing the following, 2022 would be a good time to start.
Replace the air filters. The air filters in your HVAC system trap indoor air pollutants like dust, pollen and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Every three months or so, these filters become clogged and need to be replaced. Replacing them as needed will help maintain good indoor air quality and airflow.
Keep up with maintenance. HVAC system maintenance involves two inspections a year, one for the heating system, and another for the air conditioner. Keeping up with scheduled maintenance will help ensure safe, efficient operation, improve efficiency and even extend the expected lifespan of the system.
Check your thermostat. You might be surprised to learn that many HVAC service appointments are due to a minor issue with the thermostat that can often be resolved by resetting it or replacing its batteries. Reprogramming your thermostat might be annoying, but doing so will save you the cost of one or two HVAC service appointments.
Break These Bad Habits
Bad habits can be hard to break. The following are some of the most common that can affect your HVAC system.
Turning off your HVAC system when you leave the house. It may sound counterintuitive, but keeping your system running will cost less in terms of energy consumption. It will also cause less strain. This is because HVAC systems run at full capacity for a longer time when cooling or heating a room from ambient temperatures. Turning it on and off also causes a small energy spike, which can add up if you do it daily. If you don’t have one already, invest in a programmable thermostat. It will automatically set HVAC output during different times of the day and help you save on your energy bills.
Ignoring HVAC noises. An HVAC system in good working condition should be making the same noises as it did when it was new. If you hear grinding, whistling or otherwise unusual noises coming from your HVAC system, don’t ignore them — schedule an appointment with your HVAC technician.
