Heating and Air Conditioning Efficiency Ratings
Making informed decisions about your home’s HVAC system can have a big effect on your comfort and your wallet. As much as 50% of the energy consumption in your home goes to cooling and heating; therefore you should take steps to increase the efficiency of your system. We work with the world leader in heating and cooling equipment, Carrier, to help you get the products that are right for you.
- The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER is a measure of the cooling efficiency of air conditioners and the cooling part of heat pumps. The higher the number, the more energy efficient the unit, and the more money you save. Today, all new equipment should have a SEER rating of 13.0 or better; therefore, all our Carrier line of air conditioners have ratings of between 13.0 and 21.
- The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or AFUE is a measure of an oil or gas furnace’s fuel conversion efficiency. Given in percentages, the higher the rating, the greater the efficiency; for example, if your current furnace has a rating of 60%, it means that the percentage of fuel wasted in the conversion process is 40%. Our Carrier line of furnaces has ratings ranging from 78%, the minimum industry requirement to more than 96%. The cost of investing in a new high efficiency furnace is recompensed through lower utility bills.
- The Heating Seasonal Performance Factor or HSPF is a measurement of the heating efficiency of a heat pump. Like other ratings, you should go for products with a higher number. The minimum industry requirement for modern heat pumps is 6.8 HSPF. Carrier heat pumps come with HSPF ratings of between 6.8 and 9.5.
